Hindi Web Series Mumbai Diaries 26/11 Season 1 Review:
26/11 – A date which is inscribed in the memory of every citizen of Mumbai, as the day when the famous spirit of the city came under a horrific attack from across the border. And as a journalist who covered the 26/11 terror attacks non-stop for all three days, I can say that with confidence. That what happened in those chilly nights of real terror was far more frightening and dramatic than any depiction on the reel. And Mumbai Diaries is no exception.
Director Nikkhil Advani and Nikhil Gonsalves started with the most interesting scene of the story. That is, terrorists fired at journalists at Metro Cinema signal from a moving jeep of Mumbai Police. As the show progresses, many such scenes from real events are recreated and the writers (Yash Chhetija, Nikhil Gonsalves and Anoushka Mehrotra) add a lot of gunpowder to their partly fictional screenplay. But herein lies the biggest problem.
As it finds itself in this way it is to do justice to all events with a high action is a tall order, the Mumbai Diaries only a few parts. The rest of the time, the show is busy trying to add a lot of subplots and backstories. Most of them never seem healthy or reassuring.
They only have a chaotic and drag the busy narrative, it would enter into an endless loop of several characters, their relationships and problems, which are also difficult to track after a point or to look after them. It seems compulsive to add more drama to real incidents like the death of brave police officers.
That said, what the show delivers is a harrowing account of a night of terror when things go horribly wrong. Much of what happened in those nights is covered in a relentless way. And some of it descends with confidence.
The setting up of a crumbling government hospital (by Priya Suhas) epitomizes the crumbling healthcare infrastructure of the time that was in pain to deal with an onslaught of this magnitude. The overall tonal of the show is dark and there is a lot of bloody action, not for the weak-hearted.
Despite the huge number of actors in this web series, most of them get enough screen space, but all their time is not interesting.
Mohit Raina is well cast as the headstrong Dr. Kaushik, but his backstory and relationship issues are completely compelling. Konkona Sen Sharma has been wasted in a role that is not the real reason, many of the other characters that do not add much to the runtime and cliche.
Shreya Dhanwantri’s naughty and curious reporter act is repetitive, insensitive and juvenile in the way it is done and written. Ditto for Vasundhara Kaul, who plays his boss? It is time filmmakers stop portraying journalists and media persons as gross caricatures.
