China vows ‘tough measures’ if William Lai reaches US

China has promised to take “firm measures” to protect its sovereignty after Taiwan’s Vice President William Lai arrived in the United States on a visit.

In January, Lai, a front-runner to become Taiwan’s next president, is traveling to Paraguay to attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Santiago Peña and is scheduled to make a second Stop in the American city of San Francisco.In a statement released as Lai arrived in New York on a scheduled flight from Taipei, China’s foreign ministry said it opposes any visit by “Taiwan independence separatists” to the US.
