Melanie Martinez unveiled her upcoming new album in a mystical promotional teaser, showing her emerging from an egg in an otherworldly forest dressed like a pink alien with two sets of eyes.
The new teaser confirms the new album will be called ‘Portals’ and that it’s set to be released on March 31.
Countdown to the new album
The artist began dropping hints that a new album was on the way on February 18, after archiving all her previous Instagram posts and posting a video teaser snippet.
Counting down to Wednesday’s announcement, Martinez posted a new snippet each day, each with themes of rebirth, growing embryos, and eggs incubating in forests.
The first post of her countdown shows a giant mushroom and surrounded by candles with the words “RIP CRYBABY” engraved on it, and a new song with lyrics hinting at a possible revival of Martinez’s Cry Baby character.
“My body has died but I’m still alive. Look over your shoulder, I’m back from the dead,” the song goes.
The snippet also seems to confirm the conclusion to the ‘K-12′ film, where the Cry Baby character hesitates about walking into the light.
“‘Portals’ screams death is life is death is life is death is life,” the artist reportedly said.
A long-awaited album
‘Portals’ will be the third album for the 27-year-old, following ‘K-12′ released in 2019, and her first release since the EP ‘After School’ in 2020.
Martinez’s Cry Baby persona became a fan favorite, with Martinez devising an entire storyline dedicated to the character, blending different subgenres of pop and electronic music to create an immersive world.
After appearing on Season 3 of ‘The Voice’ the artist has since led a successful career, with ‘Cry Baby’ becoming certified Platinum in 2017, having sold 1 million copies in the United States.
